Get Your WhatsApp Message Templates Approved the First Time
The Kontakly Team · August 25, 2026
Every template you send on WhatsApp is reviewed by Meta before it can go out. Rejections slow launches and, worse, repeated bad submissions can dent your quality rating. The good news: almost every rejection traces back to a short list of avoidable mistakes.
1. Choose the right category
Templates fall into three categories — Marketing, Utility and Authentication. Pick the one that honestly matches your message.
The single fastest way to get rejected (or quality-penalized later) is to dress a promotional message up as a utility one to save money. Reviewers are good at spotting it.
2. Write like a human, not a billboard
- Avoid ALL CAPS, walls of emoji, and "CLICK HERE NOW!!!"
- Say something specific — a real order number, a real date, a real offer.
- Give the message a single, clear purpose.
Vague, aggressive copy reads as spam to reviewers and to recipients alike.
3. Format your variables correctly
Placeholders are where a surprising number of templates fail:
- Number them in order:
{{1}},{{2}},{{3}}. - Do not start or end the message body with a variable — wrap them in real text.
- Do not place two variables back-to-back.
- Always provide sample values so the reviewer can see the finished message.
4. Match buttons and headers to the content
If you add a URL button, the link should go where the text says it goes. Media headers should carry a real sample. Mismatches between what you promise and what you attach are a common quiet rejection.
A quick pre-flight checklist
- Category matches the actual intent.
- Copy is specific and free of spammy formatting.
- Variables are numbered, wrapped in text, and have samples.
- Buttons and headers match the body.
- No missing or placeholder-looking content.
Run every template through those five checks before you submit, and first-time approvals become the norm rather than the exception.
